How to mirror an iPad to a Windows PC
An iPad can show its screen on a Windows PC the same way it shows it on an Apple TV: with Screen Mirroring. The PC only needs a receiver app, and the PC's own screen, projector or TV then shows the iPad, sound included.
What you need
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with Castpane or another screen mirroring receiver. Castpane is a free download from the Microsoft Store.
- The iPad and the PC on the same network. Nothing to install on the iPad.
Steps
- Open Castpane on the PC.
- On the iPad, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap Screen Mirroring and pick the PC's name.
- The iPad screen appears in a window on the PC. Make it full screen for a projector or a large display.
To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then Stop Mirroring.
In a classroom or meeting room
- Name the PC clearly in Castpane's settings, such as "Room 12 projector", so nobody picks the wrong one from the list.
- School and office Wi-Fi often filters the traffic that devices use to find receivers, so the PC may be missing from the list even though everything is set up correctly. The connection guide explains why and what to ask your network admin. For iPads on such networks, the free Castpane Link app for iPhone and iPad (coming soon) connects without the list.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb before you start, because notifications are mirrored with everything else.
- Drawing and handwriting with Apple Pencil show up live, which makes an iPad a good document camera or whiteboard on the projector.
The PC is missing from the list
Click Can't see this PC? in Castpane. The wizard checks the firewall, the network type and your adapters, and tells you what to change. The full list of causes is in iPhone, iPad or Mac can't find your PC.
Limits
Protected video from streaming apps cannot be mirrored to any third-party receiver; you get a black picture. Why. Everything else, from slides and apps to photos and games, mirrors normally.
Questions
Can students mirror their iPads to the teacher PC?
Yes, as long as the iPads and the PC are on the same network and the school Wi-Fi lets them see each other. Each student picks the PC in Screen Mirroring on their own iPad; nothing is installed on the iPads.
Does the iPad need an app?
No. Screen Mirroring is built into iPadOS. Only the PC needs a receiver.
